I am putting together a free email marketing course here. Check back often, I will be adding new lessons regularly until this is complete. last update 2/6/2015 – email course is almost ready for you to sign up.
Mindshare is Money and the Money is In the List – It’s an article where I talk about mindshare. A concept you’ll hear me mention from time to time. Mindshare is the most important thing you can have from a customer or a lead. The more, the better. With email, you can always lock in some of that mindshare.
1. Email Marketing Lessons
If you want to grow your list and expand your audience. Grow your fan base and make money with your blog and content then you’ve come to the right place. The next three lessons explain the principles behind email marketing.
Introduction to Auto-responders
An auto-responder is an email system that sends emails to your leads automatically and usually in a specific sequence.
An auto-responder sometimes is known as a sales funnel. The purpose of an auto-responder is to establish a relationship with your subscriber. I’m going to show you how to maximize your email marketing efforts using a lead magnet.
This is a permission marketing based method. This makes it one of the most effective ways to grow your audience and your business, and we’ll use an auto-responder for that.
Getting the email address
The key to growing your list is of course obtaining the email address from your audience. Presumably, you are a blogger so we’ll focus on that perspective.
Just in case you don’t have a blog but want to do email marketing, you can do it via phone, flyers, retail fronts, restaurants. The methods are the same, the formula works, the only thing that changes are the small ingredients.
In order to have a potential subscriber give you their email address, you need to give them something of extraordinary value. Some of the best you can offer. This is called the lead magnet and we’ll talk more about that soon.
Using a lead-magnet is ideal because it gives the subscriber something of value immediately and sets the tone for the relationship later on.
You will come up with a lead-magnet, or many and give it away in exchange for their email address. If you want to see a living example of this and how it all works in practice, you can download my free eBook from my other blog (look on the righ-hand side): http://notagrouch.com/
Once you have the email address then you’ll have an auto-responder system in place. This will send email series send your new subscribers will receive these emails in sequence. You pick what emails you send and when.
You can also send them email outside of that sequence. This lets you stay in touch with them later on to provide them with additional relevant information.
Having a captive audience is important. You’ll have to work hard at creating all the necessary elements for a subscriber to stay subscribed and to engage with you.
Understanding your Efforts.
In order to understand what your efforts are doing, you need to learn some basic tips and tricks about your email list system.
For example, segmenting. It is important for you to understand at least the big defining demographics of your list. As marketers, and specifically email marketers, we want to have a clear profile of our audience.
Ideally we would have one profile; one size fits all, but we are dealing with people here not just numbers. You will need to segment your list and create several profiles of the people that have subscribed. You’ll hear marketers call this your customers’ avatar.
If you read this online, then you maybe unlocked this lesson by sharing it in one of your favorite social media channels. Do you think it was worth it? If so, would you mind sharing it on a second network? There should be a “floating bar” that has the most popular social networks so you can share this. Don’t worry, you will not lose your place.
Then continue onto the next step which is to sign up for the email course. And of course, you have to enroll via email.

Clean up Junk Addresses
Sometimes when you offer a lead magnet, people will give you a bogus email address just to see if they can get your free download without giving you their real email address. This is just part of the game.
Those people will show as unsubscribed in your dashboard. It’s a good idea to clean them up. Here’s a short video that shows you how to do that. Remember, with Aweber you pay for the number of people in your list, remove the bad ones.
