In this blog review, I take a look at Sports-Fishing.com. It is Dan Hernandez’ website. Dan is famous in the fishing and outdoor space. He’s had a successful TV show for almost 3 decades now! I feel pretty honored to be reviewing his site.
Dan is asking how to generate more money with all the content he has. Adsense has been installed but it isn’t making any significant money.
As I’ve said before, you can’t really make much money out of Adsense unless you have lots and lots of traffic and highly focused topics.
We can see that the website is pretty targeted to people interested in fishing. But it is not as focused as it should be in order to monetize Adsense. I suggest a few different things in the video.
- The front page looks like a magazine-style blog. Calls to action are a bit overwhelming.
- Adsense is tucked away at the bottom. Very unlikely to generate any money in that location.
- I see a product store, but it could be a little more focused.
- No compelling reasons to join or register or get the newsletter.
- Opportunities to buy are clouded by other stuff.
The only reason people would get the newsletter now would be because they already know Dan. The newsletter should be more inviting so it attracts new readers.
It would be better if you had a lead magnet instead of just a newsletter.
Find a more compelling reason for people to join your newsletter list. Things like: “Receive a free gift” “Join our VIP club” “Get discounts for your next fishing trip” should help.
Remember… money is in the list.
The Key to Monetizing Your Content is to create a clear path to a purchase. Remove the obstacles and remove all the other distractions. Show the appropriate widgets on each section instead of using WordPress to show the same sidebars everywhere and remove the obstacles to buy.
Start blogging more about the videos you’re posting. Use keywords in your posts so you can start ranking for your content. Then use the content to drive sign-ups to your list, and use the list to convert subscribers into buyers.
Make sure each WordPress blogpost is optimized for SEO by using the walkthrough feature in the SEO for WordPress by Yoast plugin (disable other SEO plugins)
Install and configure Optinmonster in strategic places for people to sign up to your list. The one in-house ad I saw was on a “slideshow” style, remove that and remove the home page slideshow in exchange for more direct access to content. Maybe a 2-column split, or even three options where to go next.
Create opportunity for people to buy. That’s the key to leveraging your content. Make sure you have 30 – 50 blogposts and use those to create a narrative with your email newsletter.
