This is the beginning of the tutorial series for the post titled: Mindshare is Money and the Money is In the List.
There are a few ways to keep an email list for your business. All of them could work for you in different cases and from a technical point of view, most of the options available to you do what you need.
But we’re not going to focus on “options” we’re going to focus on Solutions.
I want to show you why you need a specific service when you want to do email marketing. There is a distinction I want to make between Doing Email Marketing and sending emails, or sending email blasts as some people call it.
They are NOT the same thing.
Email marketing is an entire concept and functional branch of your marketing efforts. You cannot send one email sporadically and expect results. And you cannot call that effort “email marketing”.
If you want people to respond to email, you need to build a relationship with them via email. Email marketing is constant, strategic, measurable and actionable.
Your own contact list, Outlook address book, your Gmail contacts, and any other contact manager system you have is probably not the best tool to build your email marketing campaign. If you’re interested to know why your business is in danger if you’re relying on these tools, leave a comment and I’ll explain further.
I use Aweber to build my Email marketing campaign. It is no secret that I will be recommending that to you. I put together a short video where I explain why I think you should use Aweber.

Key points in the video are:
- Free systems often send you to cryptic Q&A pages to figure out a solution to your problem.
- Free systems often advertise their service on your hard-work.
- Some systems don’t offer the features you need in their free plans.
- Some free systems don’t even allow you to send affiliate links.
- Cost of doing business is part of doing business. This is a trivial cost and if you follow my lead you should make money quickly to cover this cost anyway.
Full disclosure, re: Affiliate links on Mailchimp. Does Mailchimp allow Affiliate links?
Upon further reading, and investigating. I should clarify something and give credit to Mailchimp. They clearly state in their blog and different places that they will not shut your account down if you send an affiliate link that looks suspicious. They will merely suspend your account until they figure out what happened.
If you send an email that contains a link that has a domain that was blacklisted, then you run the risk of getting your account suspended. This doesn’t sound bad at all and it is even reasonable. Maybe.
But just consider this. You could buy some traffic to a new campaign and maybe you buy 5000 clicks (will explain more later) so that means you’ll get 5000 visitors. These visitors will likely join your email list and begin receiving your emails right away. If you buy quality traffic and you do it right, sometimes these 5000 visitors will come in a period of 12 – 24 hours.
Can you imagine what your account being suspended for say… four hours while they investigate could mean to your bottom line? For some other projects I have and for some of my clients, this could mean $1000 or up to $40,000 dollars in lost revenue.
As total full disclosure, I do use Mailchimp and I do like them but I use their free account only and for very personal purposes only. I am not crazy about their interface and one of the best features about email marketing systems is an auto-responder which is not offered with the free Mailchimp account.
I have made an annotation in the video to let viewers know a little more. At the end of the day, I still recommend you start with a paid version of your email marketing system. And I recommend you get Aweber instead of some of the other systems.
