It can be difficult to communicate with your baby. They are slow! They take so long to learn language, but you can definitely communicate with them using visual cues.
They are in fact really good at this, they express themselves in ways that we often overlook and misunderstand, but if we as parents learn how to harness the baby’s ability to imitate and communicate through body language then we can start “talking” with them at a very young age, sometimes as early as 3 or 4 months.
We learned a lot of these words while Claire was a baby and up to the time she started talking. I wish we would have continued to learn this more and more but we got lazy after she started talking. Now that we’re doing this with Oliver, we might get Claire involved in this again.
Here is one video to get started with. It’s by the Baby Einstein company. Practice these words with your baby. They are fun to learn, stimulating for them, and a good way for them to tell you what they want, or need.
The sign language words you can learn from this video are are: mommy, kiss, daddy, & baby.
