I’m really getting into this Vlogging thing. I’ve got
three down, fourth one in the making and five vlogs and two trailers. I have never seen anyone make a trailer for a vlog, but I’m doing it for fun and to make a direct connection with people.
Like I did on the NFL fantasy picks vlog. The trailer was about one person in the vlog and the vlog episode really focused on one person. It is much easier to relate to one person than to relate to a group if you think about it from the viewers point of view.
As of right now it is taking me about one to 1.5 hours to edit and finalize a 5 minute vlog. That’s not counting shooting video, that’s purely time spent editing. I then have a little script that automatically uploads the video to Youtube (as private) for me to finalize the details. But the point of the matter is that I am loving this vlogging thing.
I started doing vlogs before, I’ve done a few but never stuck to it. I still make other videos but they were pretty much just independent from one another. I always help clients create a common thread in their marketing so I decided to apply that to my vlogs. I think I’m going to try to give the Vlogs a theme and, or, common thread.
Examples of my early vlogs
Here’s one about Getting Stuff Done by taking Action
This one was about #Movember, which is coming up again and I vowed to start late september since it takes me weeks to grow any facial hair.
And one of the early days of Claire. Perhaps this was an early try-out for Papidaddy vlogs
Vlogging is getting faster.
Now that I got most of the mechanics of editing a video, I can do it faster. I am going for speed but don’t want to give up quality. Eventually I want to spend about 20 minutes editing a vlog before I finalize it. Ok, maybe 30. We’ll see how it goes, but at 1.5 hours right now, I think it’s taking me quite a while.
I think part of keeping up with something you want to do is that you need to make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself. Do things in a way that you cannot turn this into a tedious chore. Here’s what I’ve done to keep vlogging fun and create some branding and a common thread.
I try to have some things I put into every vlog. I will create a series of polls to go along with vlogs, there’s a few more. There will also be some easter eggs or cameo appearances by random people, things or objects that may come into play in a future episode or blogpost.
Start looking for those and you may want to re-watch some of the past videos. Hint, hint, some of the future giveaways will require you answer some things about the videos.
And of course a big part of keeping commonality amongst the vlogs is to use the same editing techniques. In the first three, there are a few things that match but it doesn’t take a discerning eye to see my big mismatches. I’m getting better at this and defining my templates, but still have a ways to go.
I’m still playing with different techniques, transition types, titles and music.
The bulk of the time is spent of course, shooting during the experience, whatever that maybe but I don’t really count that because that is the experience. After that, I spend the most time selecting the clips I want in the final video and then editing the video. So I’ve figured out how to save some time on those things.
In anycase. The case study is for one year, so at minimum 365 days starting September 1. As far as the vlogs go my initial thoughts on them is that I want to create a series. Remember the common thread thing I mentioned earlier? So I’m thinking the first “season” and pilot season will be pretty much focused around me and everyday life. As you’ve seen so far, that’s what it is and that really is what vlogs are about.
If you guys like it and I feel like I can share more with you I’ll do a “season two” and then I would like to introduce you more into not so much who I am, but “what I do” or “how I do it.” No matter what, I will always keep them lighthearted and personal. That is what keeps them fun for me and how I’ll make sure they don’t become a chore.
I want to chronicle my daughter’s life and this is a great way of doing that so I think I could do this for a lot longer than the case study. As for now, let’s get through launch day and month and see how it goes.
Here are all the vlogs and short clips so far, you can play the official PapiDaddyTV Playlist to watch. Use the controls to skip to the next video.
